Do Bangladeshi Factory Workers Need Saving? Sisterhood in the Post-Sweatshop Era1.Dina M. Siddiqi - 2009 - Feminist Review 91 (1):154-174.
This article revisits the figure of the ‘third world sweatshop worker’, long iconic of the excesses of the global expansion of flexible accumulation in late twentieth-century capitalism. I am interested in how feminist activists concerned with the uneven impact of neo-liberal policies can engage in progressive political interventions without participating in the ‘culture of global moralism’ that continues to surround conventional representations of third world workers. I situate my analysis in the national space of Bangladesh, where the economy is heavily (...)

Some Foundational Factors for Promoting Human Flourishing.Charles M. A. Clark, Alexander Buoye, Timothy Keiningham, Jay Kandampully, Mark Rosenbaum & Anuar Juraidini - 2019 - Humanistic Management Journal 4 (2):219-233.
This investigation examines several key factors believed to promote human flourishing, specifically: Factor 1: Age, Education, & Healthcare, Factor 2: Labor Force Participation, Factor 3: Crime, Factor 4: Income, Factor 5: Youth Unemployment and Factor 6: Voting Behavior. Data was examined at the county level, and collected from a variety of US government and non-governmental organizations. Our investigation into the conditions necessary to promote human flourishing uses internal migration within the United States as the indicator of “unhappy” communities. The findings (...)

    Bootstrapping the energy flow in the beginning of life.R. Hengeveld & M. A. Fedonkin - 2007 - Acta Biotheoretica 55 (2):181-226.
This paper suggests that the energy flow on which all living structures depend only started up slowly, the low-energy, initial phase starting up a second, slightly more energetic phase, and so on. In this way, the build up of the energy flow follows a bootstrapping process similar to that found in the development of computers, the first generation making possible the calculations necessary for constructing the second one, etc. In the biogenetic upstart of an energy flow, non-metals in the lower (...)

What is exactly the problem with panpsychism?Cyriel M. A. Pennartz - 2022 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 45.
Merker et al.'s critique calls for a deeper analysis of panpsychism. In principle, the concept of integrated information can be applied to photodiodes and subatomic particles, but I suggest the main obstacle is the lack of any evidence to confirm the presence of consciousness. Also MRW's perspectivalist theory illustrates the difficulties in synthesizing a full-fledged theory of consciousness.

The Trial and Death of Socrates: Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, Death Scene From Phaedo.G. M. A. Plato & Grube - 2000 - New York: Dover Publications. Edited by Benjamin Jowett.
The classical Athenian philosopher Socrates was tried in 399 BCE on the basis of two notoriously ambiguous charges: corrupting the youth and impiety (in Greek, asebeia). A majority of the 501 dikasts (Athenian citizen-jurors) voted to convict him. Socrates was ultimately sentenced to death by drinking a hemlock-based liquid. This well-known account of the trial is by Plato, one of Socrates' students and a famous philosopher in his own right. Whether Socrates was punished unjustly is a contested issue which to (...)

    On the Authenticity of the Hippias Maior.G. M. A. Grube - 1926 - Classical Quarterly 20 (3-4):134-.
Grote's powerful defence of Thrasyllus' canon should have taught us at least not to reject lightly any dialogue which, like the Hippias Maior, is there classed as genuine. The burden of proof lies with those who attack our dialogue. Raeder, Ritter, and Apelt consider it to be genuine, while Ast, Jowett, Horneffer, and Röllig declare against it, as also Gomperz, Zeller, and Lutoslawski.

    The Causal Inefficacy of Content.Gabriel M. A. Segal - 2009 - Mind and Language 24 (1):80-102.
The paper begins with the assumption that psychological event tokens are identical to or constituted from physical events. It then articulates a familiar apparent problem concerning the causal role of psychological properties. If they do not reduce to physical properties, then either they must be epiphenomenal or any effects they cause must also be caused by physical properties, and hence be overdetermined. It then argues that both epiphenomenalism and over‐determinationism are prima facie perfectly reasonable and relatively unproblematic views. The paper (...)

In a previous article an elementary semantic analysis showed that, logically, analogical terms and expressions must be treated as homonyms, though of a special type. The latter qualification is necessitated by the concomitant element of similarity that is found to be involved in all comparisons of the analogical type. Further, it was pointed out that the special types of similarity in question cannot be isolated through a purely semantic analysis. This is, in particular, a consequence of the fact that analogy (...)

Historical science in the context of changing paradigms of social and cultural knowledge.I. V. Frolova & M. A. Elinson - 2015 - Liberal Arts in Russia 4 (5):381.
History, as a science, has been developing in the context of a concrete epoch of scientific paradigms and types of scientific rationality. The period of constitutionalization of social and humanitarian knowledge and history refers to the middle of the 20th century, to the epoch of a triumphal approach of positivism. The formation of a ‘classical‘ historical science was connected with the fact, that history was not considered to be an art any more. It was proclaimed, that history should be based (...)

    Boerhaave's Furnace. Exploring Early Modern Chemistry through Working Models.Marieke M. A. Hendriksen & Ruben E. Verwaal - 2020 - Berichte Zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte 43 (3):385-411.
This article discusses the (re)construction and use of an Early modern instrument, better known as Herman Boerhaave's (1668–1738) little furnace. We investigate the origins, history and materiality of this furnace, and examine the dynamic relationship between historical study and reconstructing and handling an object. We argue that combining textual analysis with performative methods allows us to gain a better understanding of both the role of lost material culture in historical chemical practice, pedagogy, and knowledge production, and provide a deeper understanding (...)

Rasing the ivory tower: the production of knowledge and distrust of medicine among African Americans.J. Wasserman, M. A. Flannery & J. M. Clair - 2007 - Journal of Medical Ethics 33 (3):177-180.
African American distrust of medicine has consequences for treatment seeking and healthcare behaviour. Much work has been done to examine acute events that have contributed to this phenomenon and a sophisticated bioethics discipline keeps watch on current practices by medicine. But physicians and clinicians are not the only actors in the medical arena, particularly when it comes to health beliefs and distrust of medicine. The purpose of this paper is to call attention not just to ethical shortcomings of the past, (...)

    Chaotic Fruit Fly Algorithm for Solving Engineering Design Problems.M. A. El-Shorbagy - 2022 - Complexity 2022:1-19.
The aim of this article is to present a chaotic fruit fly algorithm as an optimization approach for solving engineering design problems. In CFFA, the fruit fly algorithm, which is recognized for its durability and efficiency in addressing optimization problems, was paired with the chaotic local search method, which allows for local exploitation. CFFA will be set up to work in two phases: in the first, FFA will be used to discover an approximate solution, and in the second, chaotic local (...)

. This paper illustrates the applications of various ensemble methods for enhanced classification accuracy. The case in point is the Pima Indian Diabetic Dataset. The computational model comprises of two stages. In the first stage, k-means clustering is employed to identify and eliminate wrongly classified instances. In the second stage, a fine tuning in the classification was effected. To do this, ensemble methods such as AdaBoost, bagging, dagging, stacking, decorate, rotation forest, random subspace, MultiBoost and grading were invoked along with (...)
